When will my child start to bring home an AR book?
Posted by:Once your child can read 100 sight words they will begin the Accelerated Reader (AR) program. In kindergarten this program is used to get your child reading. Your child will bring home a library book to read. Please let your child read the book to you several times. When your child is ready to take a test on the book please send it back to school with a note in the agenda stating that your child is ready to test. Your child will have to read most of the test. Ms. Lynn will sit with them while they take the test and can help with unfamiliar words but she cannot read the entire test to your child. Your child needs to take at least 1-2 AR tests per week to meet their goal.

Does my child need any supplies?

Your child will also get a class shirt to wear for field trips. From time to time, I may send home a note about some other classroom need such as Clorox wipes and facial tissue. We go through a lot of these and they are always a welcomed donation.

It is also an expectation that kindergarten students fluently add/subtract within 5 and know a minimum of 25 math facts. Students are required to show mastery of 90% of both the English Language Arts and Math standards on the Georgia Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills assessment. We also give the MAP reading and math assessments and students should be at least at the 20th percentile level to be ready to move forward to first grade.

Will there be homework?
Posted by:Yes. Inside your child's red homework folder , there is a right back to school pocket where homework should be kept. Your child will receive homework on Monday. The homework will be due Friday. Your child should review sight words each day this is a nightly expectation. Also, there will be 1-2 pages of reading and math homework. The homework is quick and can be done all at once or a little each night. Homework is an independent review of classroom skills and should be able to be completed independently by your child. As long as the completed homework is turned in Friday, your child is meeting expectations.

What is PBIS?
Posted by:PBIS is our countywide behavior system. It stands for Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports and is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture all students need in order to achieve social, emotional and academic success. Through this system, students are encouraged to display positive behavior by being rewarded for making good decisions throughout the school day. Students may earn Canes Cash when they are displaying positive behavior. Canes Cash can then be used to purchase items in the Canes Store.
