Math Fact Fluency:
- Make flashcards with adding or subtraction facts to 10. Focus on adding or subtracting only one digit for at least one week. (2+3; 3+3: 4+3; 5+3...) Frequently, go back and review previously learned facts.
- Practice counting from any number to 120. (113,114,115... 87,88,89,90...)
Time and Money
- Let your child practice counting real coins. Begin counting with the larger coins (quarters), then dimes, nickels and pennies. Knowing how to count by fives from any five is so helpful. Ex. 35, 40, 45... 50, 55, 60.... Watch the Youtube video on Touch Counting of coins in the websites.
- Discuss time and practice telling time on an analog clock (not a digital clock). Do this everyday at various times of the day. First grade tells time to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour (11:15). Talk to them about A.M. and P.M.
Word Problems
- Give your child real situations to solve. Ex. You cut an apple into 6 slices. You want your brother, sister, and yourself to have an equal number of pieces. How do you solve your problem? Ex. You need 15 cents to buy gum. You only have 4 cents. How much more do you need?
