History of Washington Park Elementary School
By: Tomiko Rooks
Ever wonder why all of the other schools in the county begin with Jasper County except the elementary school? Washington Park Elementary School was established some years ago. The original name of the school was Jasper County Training School. This school was located on a different site in Monticello and after many years needed to be rebuilt. The new school was built in 1956 and was at the location of what is now the Old Washington Park. At this time the school was still called Jasper County Training School. During the time of integration is when the name change took place. Some citizens did not like the name Jasper County Training School, so a new name was given. The area of the school at the time was called Washington Park, like so many other schools now named for the area in which the are located. The original colors were black and gold and the original mascot was the Indian Chief.
